Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is an advanced orthodontic treatment system that uses a series of clear, nearly invisible plastic aligners to straighten your teeth and jaw. The aligners are made of SmartTrack®, an FDA-approved durable thermoplastic that’s free of allergens.

In addition to being more comfortable than traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. You take them out while eating, which means you can still consume your favorite snacks, including apples, nuts, or granola bars.

The Dental Design Studios also offers SureSmile®, which is similar to Invisalign, in that it straightens your teeth with clear aligners that are virtually invisible. SureSmile aligners are versatile and can be combined with other orthodontic treatments like metal braces for effective, customized treatment.

Another option for patients is Fastbraces®, which adjusts the crown of your teeth and the position of your roots at the same time. The innovative triangular bracket and specially-shaped square wire correct your tooth roots from the very onset of treatment, so your crown and root realign simultaneously and quicker.

What types of alignment issues can Invisalign aligners correct?

At The Dental Design Studios, Dr. Hernandez uses Invisalign to correct various alignment issues, including:

  • Crowding
  • Crooked teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Gaps between teeth

Invisalign can also address a malpositioned or misaligned jaw.

What does Invisalign treatment involve?

Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation at The Dental Design Studios. During your appointment, Dr. Hernandez conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals for treatment. Then, she takes a series of oral X-rays to assess the alignment of your teeth and jaw.

After gathering the necessary information, Dr. Hernandez takes digital impressions of your teeth with an intraoral scanner. She then uploads your impressions to a computer program and creates a custom orthodontic care plan that maps the step-by-step movements of your teeth.

Once Dr. Hernandez finalizes the treatment plan, she sends your impressions to a dental laboratory. The laboratory uses your impressions to manufacture a pair of Invisalign aligners that fit your teeth perfectly.

Throughout Invisalign treatment, you visit The Dental Design Studios every two or three weeks. At each checkup, Dr. Hernandez provides you with a new set of aligners that continue the orthodontic process.

How long does orthodontic treatment with Invisalign take?

The length of time that Invisalign treatment takes depends on your adherence to the care plan and the issues being addressed.

Most people achieve a straight, symmetrical smile within 6-12 months, but it can take up to 18 months and sometimes longer. To speed up the process, wear your aligners between 20-22 hours each day, only removing them to eat or brush your teeth.

Do I need to clean my Invisalign aligners?

Yes. Invisalign aligners are like mouthguards or partial dentures in that they collect food particles and bacteria. To prevent build-up, rinse them in cool tap water several times a day and brush them with toothpaste before going to bed. You can also ask Dr. Hernandez about the Invisalign cleaning system.
